Please be advised that a traffic plan change will be in effect starting Monday, June 5th and will continue through August. Set-up will begin on June 3rd and June 4th to prepare for the implementation of the change, including line striping, placement of barrels, and installation of detour signage. These closures are in place for utility work, roadway and sidewalk reconstruction to allow for an improved traffic alignment.
Access to Monsignor O’Brien Highway from East Street will be closed. From Cambridge Crossing, traffic will be detoured from Morgan Ave to North First Street to turn left on Monsignor O’Brien Highway. This will include MBTA bus traffic. The westbound lanes of Cambridge Street will be closed. The current traffic signals will be taken offline and removed for new signal installations.
The eastbound lane on Cambridge Street will remain open, with a temporary yield sign to be installed at the corner of Cambridge and Monsignor O’Brien Highway. The North First Street extension, which is a new roadway through a section of the old Lechmere station site, connecting North First Street to First Street, will be opened to traffic heading towards Cambridge Street. There will be no access on North First Street Extension coming from Cambridge Street to Monsignor O’Brien Highway. Traffic coming from North First Street Extension and Cambridge Street heading towards Somerville will be directed to take Third Street to Monsignor O’Brien Highway.
New crosswalks will be established for pedestrian traffic from the Cambridge Crossing development to Cambridge Street through a section of the old Lechmere Station site. Please view the graphic below for additional information. Police details and detour signage will be in place to direct motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians. Please note, fair weather is needed for the majority of these activities.
